  • 50.5 Things to Enjoy in Oklahoma

My friend Adrian Martinez has this thing with numbers, he makes lists on his blog using the number “5.” I thought that was pretty weak personally, at least pick a double digit number! So in honor of Oklahoma’s 101st birthday, here’s a list of 50.5 wonders (1 for every 2 years for all you math buffs out there):

    1. Sonic: established in Shawnee, Oklahoma

    2. Sunsets: no smog=beauty

    3. People that look at you as you walk pass them: think about doing this West Coast

    4. The Musical: Name another state with a more amazing musical!

    5. Norman, Oklahoma: my birthplace

    6. Bar B Q: I know there are other states that have it, but it is the perfect blend of styles

    7. Churches: there is a church for every 2.3 people in the state

    8. Graveyards: seriously, there are so many places where you can get buried, it is sort of weird…but convenient when its all said and done

    9. Flaming Lips: the most influential band ever…even more than Pearl Jam!

    10. Oklahoma City Thunder: they were stolen, but you have to be generous on a 101 item list

    11. Putt-O-Rama: the single greatest putt-putt challenge ever created by man

    12. Chieftain Stadium: home of the Buffalo Bills of high school football

    13. Will Rogers: he was funny, that’s what I was told

    14. Fort Sill: let’s honor our patriots America…

    15. Relaxed Driving: I could drive 3 hours in any direction and rarely have to pay serious attention (note to all under 16: this is a joke, you should pay attention at all times)

    16. Bob’s Bar B Q: this is where I at one time held the record for most ribs eaten in one sitting (21 huge ribs)

    17. Weather: there is not another state where all 4 seasons can be experienced in 1 day

    18. Gary England: the most famous person in the weather business

    19. Vision: you can see farther in Oklahoma than most places

    20. Cheap Gas: I seriously envy the fact that gas is always cheaper there

    21. Garth Brooks: you may say you don’t like him now, but you can tell me that “Unanswered Prayers” didn’t make you think back in the day

    22. Falls Creek: the largest Baptist youth camp in the world…perhaps in the universe

    23. Interstates: they don’t call’em “freeways” and there are only 4 of them in the whole state!

    24. Tornados: they make things interesting, and people watch get to watch them typically from their porch

    25. Oklahoma Sooners: America’s team

    26. “Is this a great State or what?”: a portion of the news on Sunday nights talking about how great the state of Oklahoma actually is!

    27. Conservatives: no state had a wider margin between McCain and Obama

    28. Unity: let’s all take a deep breath and relax, remember “Out of Many we are One”

    29. Education: they taught me, look how I turned out!

    30. Mosquitos: nothing more enjoyable than getting bit by one of these guys…

    31. Carrie Underwood: I have 19.5 more things to go

    32. Backyards: So many people moving to urban areas and missing out on this dying wonder

    33. Bears: We don’t have them and let’s continue to pray they don’t come

    34. Trans Fats: This is a staple of the people, may arteries not be blocked too quickly

    35. Hope: 35% voted for Obama, Yes They Did!

    36. Pete Seeger: He sang a song about Oklahoma I think

    37. Pete Sampras: He has a ton of back hair and I’m sure he’s travelled through the state

    38. Football: I remember my friends telling me that they wouldn’t think I was a man if I didn’t try out…I tried out

    39. Golf: I eventually made it on the golf team…

    40. Oklahoma Baptist University: the Baptist university of them all! Take that Southwest Baptist!

    41. Native Americans: only 3% of the whole US population is Native American, and most of them live in Oklahoma…that’s a fact!

    42. Boredom: Is anyone really reading a list of things about Oklahoma that consists of 50.5 items at this point?

    43. Scissored-tailed Fly Catcher: the Oklahoma state bird, most awesome name of a state bird

    44. My Grandma Eliza’s Carmel Cake: seriously the best icing on a cake ever created

    45. People that still like Jeff Foxworthy: you thought he was done, if my spam mail from friends back home says anything then I kindly disagree

    46. Voice of the Martyrs: this is my one actually serious thing, great organization that every Christian should support

    47. Matt Cobb Foundation: another great organization, dedicated to all things Matt Cobb-related

    48. Tarahumara’s: I don’t know what that means in English, but it has to do with amazing Mexican food! Go there, and it is right across the street from the hospital that saw me come into the world!

    49. Tulsa: They have a grid system for their roads, this is the way every actually significant city should be created!

    50. Anadarko: This is the “Indian Capital of the World” and no, I’m not kidding

50.5. Pride in the State: seriously ask anyone from Oklahoma and they will sing you the state song…can you do that California?

Well there you go world, hope you enjoyed reading this list of all things Oklahoma. Next state to celebrate: North Carolina on November 21st!
